Contractor-specified fire-suppression packages rely on FM/UL-listed gate, butterfly and check valves, fire pumps and sprinkler fittings — equipment where the listing itself is the deliverable, not just a performance spec. We bundle the valve, pump and fitting schedules so one RFQ covers the entire riser room.
Each requirement below drives a specific material, design or documentation choice — miss any and the item fails inspection, or fails in service.
Unlike most industrial valves, fire protection items are typically required by code to carry UL listing or FM approval — a valve with equivalent performance but no listing cannot be installed on a permitted system. The listing number has to be verifiable against the UL/FM database before the item ships.
UL Listed · FM ApprovedA fire isolation valve that gets closed accidentally defeats the entire system without anyone noticing until an alarm fails to suppress a fire. OS&Y (outside screw and yoke) gate valves give a visible open/closed indication, and supervisory tamper switches report valve position to the fire alarm panel.
OS&Y · Supervisory switchFire pumps are certified to UL448 or FM1343 against a published performance curve (rated flow at rated pressure, with specific overload and shutoff points) per NFPA 20 — a pump that merely "flows enough water" on paper is not interchangeable with a listed unit.
UL448 · FM1343 · NFPA 20Fire protection valves sit idle for years between activations, often in unheated riser rooms or exposed fire pump houses — corrosion can seize a valve that is never cycled. Coated cast-iron and ductile-iron bodies with factory-applied corrosion protection are standard for this duty.
Coated ductile ironFeed the working condition into the selector below and the bundle in the next section is what a compliant spec resolves to.
OS&Y gate valves are the standard main riser isolation valve because the visible stem position doubles as a tamper indicator even without the electrical switch.
Supervised butterfly valves cover branch and floor-control isolation at lower cost than OS&Y gate valves while still reporting position to the fire alarm panel.
Check valves prevent backflow at the fire pump discharge and at any cross-connection with the domestic water supply, as required by code.
UL448/FM1343 fire pumps are selected to the system's NFPA 20 design flow and pressure — not a generic pump curve — because the listing itself is checked during plan review and acceptance testing.
| Parameter | Typical range | What we select | Driver |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listing | UL / FM | UL Listed or FM Approved per authority having jurisdiction | Code requirement, not performance choice |
| Valve type (main) | OS&Y gate | OS&Y with visible stem position | Main riser isolation, tamper visibility |
| Valve type (branch) | Butterfly, supervised | Supervised butterfly with tamper switch | Branch isolation, alarm panel reporting |
| Pump certification | UL448 / FM1343 | Matched to NFPA 20 design flow/pressure | System design & acceptance testing |
| Body coating | Epoxy / factory paint | Factory-applied corrosion coating | Long idle periods between activation |
| Material cert | 3.1 / UL file number | UL/FM file number verifiable per item | Code compliance documentation |

A fire-suppression contractor on a high-rise project needed UL/FM-listed isolation valves and a certified fire pump package delivered against a tight riser-room installation schedule.
Scope: UL/FM OS&Y gate valves for main riser isolation on each floor zone, supervised butterfly valves for branch isolation, a UL448-certified electric fire pump sized to the building's NFPA 20 design flow, and matched sprinkler fittings.
UL/FM file numbers for every item were verified and supplied ahead of delivery, letting the contractor's fire engineer clear the authority-having-jurisdiction review without a second submittal cycle.
UL/FM file numbers verified · NFPA 20 pump sizing · single-cycle AHJ approval
The same checks our engineers run before quoting a package for this duty.
One RFQ covers every item in this solution. We select, price and consolidate the bundle, and reply within 12h in EN / RU / ES / AR.
