Marine & Offshore

Shipyards and offshore platforms need class-approved valves, seawater-resistant SS316 and bronze fittings, and heavy-duty bilge and fire pumps — equipment that has to survive continuous immersion and pass a class society survey, not just a hydrostatic test. We document every line item to class society requirements (DNV, ABS, LR) with end-to-end material traceability.

Working Conditions & Challenges

Why this is a hard spec to buy against

Each requirement below drives a specific material, design or documentation choice — miss any and the item fails inspection, or fails in service.

Continuous Seawater Corrosion

SS316 pits under continuous seawater immersion over years — it is not the final answer, only a slower-failing one. Super-duplex (ASTM A890 5A/6A), naval bronze, or copper-nickel are specified for sea chests, overboard discharge and any component with permanent wetted exposure.

Class Society Type Approval

A valve or pump without DNV, ABS or LR type approval cannot go on a classed vessel or platform regardless of how well it is built — the certificate, not the component, is what the surveyor checks. Type approval has to be confirmed by product line before quoting, not assumed from a general "marine-grade" label.

DNV · ABS · LR

Fire Main & Bilge Requirements

SOLAS mandates specific fire main and bilge pump capacity and valve arrangements that vary by vessel class and tonnage — getting the pump curve or valve count wrong fails the survey, not just the spec sheet. Fire and bilge pump packages are quoted against the vessel's actual SOLAS category.

SOLAS fire & bilge

Vibration & Shock Qualification

Hull-borne vibration and the shock loading of heavy seas exceed what industrial-duty valves and pump mounts are rated for. Marine-qualified items carry documented vibration and shock test records, not just a pressure-test certificate.

Selection Logic

How we pick valves and pumps for this duty

Feed the working condition into the selector below and the bundle in the next section is what a compliant spec resolves to.

Resolves to: bronze or SS316 seawater ball/gate valve for sea-chest and ballast isolation, a cast-iron bilge pump sized to SOLAS bilge capacity, and a fire pump matched to the vessel's SOLAS fire-main category — each line item carrying the relevant DNV / ABS / LR type approval.

Why this combination

Bronze and SS316 valves cover the majority of sea-chest, ballast and general service isolation duty at a cost well below super-duplex, reserving the higher alloy for continuous-immersion components only.

Bilge pumps are sized against SOLAS-mandated bilge capacity for the vessel's tonnage class — not a generic flow/head selection — because survey sign-off checks the capacity number directly.

Fire pumps match the vessel's SOLAS fire-main category; electric or diesel drive is selected based on the vessel's emergency power arrangement.

Class type approval (DNV/ABS/LR) travels with each item as a document, confirmed against the vessel's classification society before the order is placed — this is what the surveyor actually checks, not the component spec sheet.

Shipyard — Newbuild Bilge & Fire Main Package

Shipyard — Newbuild Bilge & Fire Main Package

A shipyard building a mid-size commercial vessel needed the bilge and fire main valve and pump package sourced and documented to the vessel's classification society ahead of the survey date.

Scope: bronze and SS316 seawater valves for sea-chest and ballast isolation, a SOLAS-sized bilge pump, a fire pump matched to the vessel's fire-main category, and class-approved flange/gasket sets for the seawater piping.

Each item's type-approval certificate was matched to the vessel's classification society before the order was placed, and EN 10204 3.2 material certificates were supplied per heat so the yard's QA package was complete ahead of the class survey.
